A person has died in a fire in Sutton which will be investigated by police.

Emergency services were called to Church Hill Road in North Cheam shortly before 9am this morning (Saturday, May 4).

A body was found within the building.

Police believe they know the person’s identity and are in contact with their family.

The cause of the fire is under investigation, however it is not believed to be suspicious at this early stage.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Police said: “Emergency services were called shortly before 09:00hrs on Saturday, 4 May, to an outbuilding on fire at residential premises in Church Hill Road, North Cheam.

“Officers attended along with colleagues from LFB and LAS.

“Sadly, a body was found within the outbuilding.

“Officers believe they know this person’s identity and are in contact with family members.

“The cause of the fire is under investigation by officers and LFB colleagues.

“At this early stage, the fire is not believed to be suspicious, however enquiries continue.”

A spokesperson for London Fire Brigade said: "Sadly a person has died following a fire in North Cheam.

"Four fire engines and around 25 firefighters responded to a fire in a garden on Church Hill Road.

"A single-story garden office was completely destroyed by the fire.

"Whilst carrying out firefighting operations, crews discovered a person who was sadly declared dead at the scene.

The Brigade received the first of 16 calls reporting the fire at 0855, and the incident was under control by 1018.

"Firefighters from Sutton, Mitcham, New Malden and surrounding fire stations attended the scene.

"The fire is under investigation by the Brigade and the Metropolitan Police Service."
